Ylang-ylang oil is an essential oil extracted from the fragrant yellow flowers of the tree Cananga odorata growing in Southern India, Java, Philippines and in many islands of tropical countries. Its excellent fascinating fragrance is obtained through steam distillation of flowers and separated into different grades which contain several allergens including main sensitizer dihydro di-isoeugenol (DDIE). It is used in aroma therapy, to relieve high blood pressure, normalizes sebum secretion and is considered to be an aphrodisiac. First discovered to be a cosmetic sensitizer in 1971 and not an uncommon component of many cosmetics, fragrances and perfumes. Most of them are stay on product leading to contact sensitization in susceptible individuals following repeated exposure over a long period of time. Contact hypersensitivity and pigmented contact dermatitis have been reported from Japan by Nakayama et al.
Toyada et al., claimed that the elimination of DDIE from the ylang-ylang oil resulted in reduced incidence of contact hypersensitivity. In another study of 32 patients known patch test reactivity to fragrance mix, 2 patients showed positive reaction to 2% aqua extract of Cananga odoratum (plant containing ylang-ylang oil).
Thin layer chromatography of commonly advertised aromatic oils in India and ylang-ylang oil as a control showed that some of the components of aromatic oils had similar Rf (relative front) to the components of ylang-ylang oil which confirms its presence in these oils.

FNWL Response: Nancy, essential oils are highly concentrated. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is especially strong aromatically, and is best used extremely well diluted. A little goes a long way. Smelling it straight out of the bottle can be quite a potent experience. Try blending it with other essential oils for a remarkable blend. Try blending just a hint of ylang ylang with orange, mandarin or tangerine essential oils. We are a wholesaler not a retailer, so although we do offer several sizes so that an ingredient can be tried at small sizes first, we sell mostly to artisans and manufacturers that buy in bulk, so it isn't reasonable for us to sell incredibly tiny sizes.
The various grades of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil will typically have different potencies when it comes to scent. Fractional distillation is usually done in a time-dependent manner where a number of hours elapse between collections of the different grades. The extraction of Ylang Ylang #1 will have a more potent scent, Ylang Ylang #2 will be slightly less potent and the Ylang Ylang #3 will be the mildest. The main constituents present in the grades will also influence the overall scent of the Ylang Ylang Oil.
Perhaps not quite as potent a sleep remedy as lavender oil, ylang ylang isn't far behind. An extract of tropical trees in Asia, ylang ylang--like lavender oil--lowers blood pressure and heart rate and quite naturally sets the body up for sleep. When breathed in, the oil gives off a very fruity and pleasing scent, something which is calming in its own right.
Bergamot oil has a little something for everyone, and insomnia-sufferers are no exception. Noted for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, bergamot oil also reduces blood pressure and heart rate and prepares the body for sleep, much in the same way that lavender oil and ylang ylang oil do. As an added benefit, though, bergamot oil has been shown to reduce stressful thoughts, which are a common barrier to good rest. Put a few drops in a steaming pot of water and breathe in deeply and sleep won't be far behind!
