Plot Summary
Gowtham Ramalingam is an intelligent TV journalist who works in a small channel. He comes from a family of media professionals, as his father Ramalingam is a news presenter working in Doordarshan and his grandfather was a newsreader in All India Radio. Gowtham has a dream of joining the BBC and gets an offer letter from them. He also falls in love with Anu, his colleague in the same channel.
However, his life takes a turn when he gets arrested on charges of cheating banks by producing fake documents and degree certificates. He realizes that he has been made a pawn in a huge scam run by Thura Sarkar, a ruthless businessman who forges degree certificates and sells them to students who want to study abroad or get jobs. Thura Sarkar also uses the fake certificates to obtain loans from banks and then transfers the money to his offshore accounts. He has a network of agents who scout for potential customers and lure them with attractive offers.
Gowtham's degree certificate gets invalidated and he loses his job at BBC. He decides to infiltrate and expose the scam with the help of his neighbour who works in the police department, his friend Balaji who is a lawyer, his friend Senthil who is also a TV journalist, and Anu who supports him. He traces the source of the fake certificates to a consultancy firm in Anna Nagar and finds out that Thura Sarkar has a huge warehouse where he stores all the fake certificates. He also learns that Thura Sarkar has a mole in the police department who leaks information to him.
Gowtham manages to get into Thura Sarkar's warehouse and steals some of the fake certificates. He then contacts Thura Sarkar and challenges him to stop him from exposing the scam. Thura Sarkar gets furious and sends his men to kill Gowtham. Gowtham escapes from them and reaches his channel office where he plans to broadcast the truth live. However, Thura Sarkar hacks into the channel's system and blocks Gowtham's broadcast. He also kidnaps Anu and threatens to kill her if Gowtham does not surrender.
Gowtham decides to confront Thura Sarkar at his hideout where he has kept Anu hostage. He fights with Thura Sarkar's men and reaches Thura Sarkar's room where he finds Anu tied up. He frees her and faces Thura Sarkar who tries to shoot him. Gowtham dodges the bullet and punches Thura Sarkar hard, knocking him unconscious. He then takes Anu and leaves the place.
The police arrive at the scene and arrest Thura Sarkar and his associates. They also recover all the fake certificates and money from his warehouse. Gowtham gets cleared of all charges and gets his degree certificate back. He also gets his job at BBC reinstated. He thanks his friends and family for their support and hugs Anu.
Review
Kanithan is an action thriller that tries to tackle a relevant social issue of fake certificate scam. The movie has a good premise and a promising start, but fails to maintain the momentum and interest throughout. The movie suffers from a weak screenplay that has many loopholes, clichés, and illogical scenes. The movie also has unnecessary songs and comedy that hamper the pace and seriousness of the movie. The movie could have been more engaging and realistic if it had focused more on the investigation and journalism aspects rather than the heroism and romance.
The movie's strength lies in its action sequences, which are well-choreographed and executed. The movie also has some good performances from the lead actors, especially Atharvaa who carries the movie on his shoulders. He portrays the role of Gowtham with conviction and intensity. He also impresses with his physical transformation and stunts. Catherine Tresa looks beautiful and does a decent job as Anu, though she does not have much scope in the movie. Tarun Arora is effective as the menacing Thura Sarkar, though his character is not well-developed.
The movie's music by Drums Sivamani is average and does not add much value to the movie. The background score is loud and repetitive. The cinematography by Arvind Krishna is good and captures the mood of the movie. The editing by Bhuvan Srinivasan is crisp and smooth. The direction by T. N. Santhosh is decent, but he could have done better with a tighter script and a better execution.
Overall, Kanithan is a one-time watch movie that has some thrilling moments, but also has many flaws and drawbacks. It is not a bad movie, but it is not a great movie either. It is a movie that could have been much better if it had been more focused and realistic.
